About Me
I am Kristin Kirkpatrick owner, operator, baker, cake decorator,
and the inspiration behind FAT GIRL CAKES. At the ripe old age of 12, my mom threw
cookie dough at me and told me to make the Christmas cookies since she had had enough
of the "sticky mess". Well, something clicked and I not only made cookies that
year but I've been making them every year since. As the years progressed, my
interest in baking expanded from cookies to that of bread, pies, and cakes, and
I was always asked to bring a dessert to parties. After the birth of my son, I felt
like I was ready to venture out there and try something new. I picked up chocolate
making first, starting with molded chocolates and working my way into truffles
and peanut brittle. Finally, I started decorating cakes several months ago and
to say I feel in love with it is an understatement! Ever since my first Wilton
course, I knew that I needed to share my passion for making and decorating cakes
with others and now I am getting to do just that! Since the completion of my
Wilton courses, I have become a Wilton instructor. I have also taken classes
with Norman Davis (The Sweet Life), Colette Peters (Colette's Cakes), Ruth Rickey
(Sweet Justice), Diane Simmons (Cake Connection), and Michaelle Stidham (Cake
Connection). I am a member of ICES (International Cake Exploration Society)
and attended the National Capitol Area Cake Show in 2009.
I do both fondant and buttercream work, with the most popular being a buttercream cake with fondant accents. I also work with royal icing, colorflow, gelatin and gumpaste, with the hopes of learning different techniques and mediums. I really enjoy creating and hope you will allow me to help you celebrate that special occasion or "just because" with a cake, cookies, or special treat!
On the personal side... I am a stay-at-home mom with a 2
year old little boy who also works part-time as a system tester. I grew up in
Hazleton, Pennsylvania and graduated from Lafayette College, located in Easton,
PA, with a degree in Mathematics. After graduation, I moved to Northern
Virginia and was sent to live and work in Richmond, VA, Honolulu, Hawaii, and
Harrisburg, PA. I met my husband, the very talented web designer, over six
years ago and moved to Fredericksburg, VA, where I now reside and Fat Girl Cakes
operates. Other interests include scrapbooking, watching movies, and hanging
out with my family.
